The Chinese Government had not recruited any foreigners for
the Customs Service for twelve years, but they would probably
agree that Sir Frederick Maze should be succeeded by a
British national.
MR. ORDE agreed that the Foreign Office should put up
the question to the Foreign Secretary with a view to getting
a decision, if possible, before Sir H. Knatchbull Hug essen
reached Tokyo.
